Uitbundige anime van grootmeester Masaaki Yuasa over blinde luitspeler Tomona en diens muze, de monsterlijke danser/zanger Inu-Oh. De film speelt zich af in veertiende-eeuws Japan, maar verandert halverwege in een jaren zeventig-rockopera, wanneer Tomona en Inu-Oh elkaar voor het eerst ontmoeten en besluiten de handen ineen te slaan. Megasucces in Japan, ongetwijfeld mede dankzij het feit dat de stem van Inu-Oh werd ingezongen door de Japanse ‘fashion punk’-rocker Avu-chan, zanger van de populaire band Queen Bee. Inu-Oh staat overigens voor ‘Koning van de honden’. Een film die nooit verveelt, maar Yuasa’s chaotische en extravagante vertelstijl is maar moeilijk een hele film uit te houden.
